Our Climate Change Research Series investigates the relationship between climate change and property catastrophe risk. In our introductory paper, we introduce the foundations of climate change science and describe how climate models provide a deeper understanding of the environment in which we live today and the uncertainties around how our climate may evolve in the future.

Some of the most interesting observations include:

  • The impact of climate change cannot be disregarded.
  • Decades of research have dramatically improved our understanding of the changing climate, which, when combined with the (re)insurance industry’s climate modelling capability, provides material insight into the physical impacts of these changes.
  • There are observable changes in hazard, specifically sea-level rise, that will need to be accounted for, while other impacts are less easily quantified on small time and space scales and require further research and analysis.
  • Climate projections are uncertain, but climate change risk analytics enable us to quantify this uncertainty and improve our investment decisions.

Our clients enjoy unique access to our research team and their industry-leading expertise. Working closely with our underwriters, our research team helps inform our view of risk. To find out more and access the full research paper, please reach out to your usual Aeolus contact or email us at .
